About Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation, otherwise known as augmentation mammoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that enhances the size and contour of the breasts through the use of implants. At The Hamlet Clinic, we provide our breast augmentation patients with different options to choose from to fully customize a procedure suited for their desires. These options include implant type, placement, size, and shape. Dr. Hamlet can recommend the optimal options to help patients meet their aesthetic goals.
For many women, undergoing a breast enhancing surgery is a major decision. Our previous breast augmentation patients have gained a new found pride in their appearance and saw a large improvement in their self-confidence. A breast augmentation gives women the opportunity to feel better in their own skin and customize their figures to their exact desired aesthetic.
Breast Augmentation Implant Types
The type of implant that is chosen for the breast augmentation is decided based on the patient’s needs and preferences. The Hamlet Clinic offers different options when selecting implant composition. The two main types of implants that are offered:
Saline implants are filled with a sterile salt water solution within a silicone shell. These implants are placed into the breast pocket empty and filled once inserted. For this reason, the incisions made for this type of implant are typically smaller. Its structure is designed to provide a natural looking breast shape.
Silicone implants are the most commonly chosen between the two implant compositions. This type of implant is pre-filled with a silicone gel that has a natural feeling similar to breast tissue. Many women find this implant to be a more attractive option because it provides a more natural feel and appearance than saline. Silicone can be round or anatomical shape (sloped similar to natural breast shape.)
The periareolar incision is made around the outer edge of the areola. This will result in a scar that is nicely camouflaged within the border of the areola. This incision type is most commonly utilized when performing a breast lift at the same time.
The inframammary incision is a short incision that is placed under the breast at its natural crease. It is easily concealed within the breast fold and is nicely hidden when wearing a bra or bathing suit. An advantage of this incision is the better access to the pocket compared to the other incision types.
The transaxillary incision is made in the armpit. Dr. Hamlet will then use a specialized camera and surgical instruments to ensure optimal placement of the implant. A small scar will be left within the armpit with no scarring on the breast itself.
Breast Implant Placement
Breast implants are placed in a pocket made either behind or in front of the chest muscle. Placement is usually determined by the amount of natural breast tissue a patient has. If she has a substantial amount, the implant can be placed in front of the muscle behind the breast tissue. If she doesn’t have a lot of natural breast tissue, the implant may be placed behind the muscle to better conceal it. This will be determined at the initial consultation.
Breast Implants Vs. Breast Fat Transfer
When looking to enhance the breasts, there are different procedures that patients can choose from. Enlarging the breasts can be done in one of two ways: through the use of implants or by utilizing one’s own fat. Breast implants are the most commonly chosen method for increasing breast size. Breast implants, as previously discussed, are either filled with a saline solution or silicone gel.
These implants have a wide range of shapes and sizes to tailor each procedure to the patient’s exact desires. In comparison, breast fat transfer is the more natural breast enlargement method. This procedure requires no use of synthetic materials for the enhancement but instead uses the patient’s excess fat. The unwanted fat will be extracted from one region of the body, typically using VASER liposuction, and injected into the breasts after the graft has been cleaned. With this procedure, the breasts can be enlarged by only one to two cup sizes. It is not ideal for patients who are looking to achieve a significant increase in bust size.
There is not one procedure that is better than the other; it merely depends on the goals of the patient. The breast enlargement procedure options will be explained in further detail during the initial consultation with Dr. Hamlet. He will be able to help patients decide what option is best for their needs.
Candidates for breast augmentation are women who are looking to enhance the shape and size of their bust through the use of implants. Those who are interested in natural breast augmentation can inquire about the breast fat transfer procedure during the consultation.
Women who are considering this procedure should be in good health and have realistic expectations for the procedure results.
Women seeking this surgery should not be currently nursing or pregnant. It is important to note that women who want breast augmentation should already have completed their family; pregnancy and breastfeeding can negatively impact the patient’s results.
If patients are interested in also lifting their breasts to a higher position, a breast lift can be combined with this procedure. For those who are interested in a breast augmentation, we encourage them to contact The Hamlet Clinic and schedule a consultation to meet with Dr. Hamlet.
Schedule A Consultation
The first step in the breast augmentation process is scheduling a consultation with Dr. Hamlet. During this consultation, he will ask the patient about their particular concerns and what they are looking to achieve. He will then review the patient’s medical history, mainly looking at their current health, routine medications, and previous procedures. It is important the patient informs Dr. Hamlet of any pre-existing conditions to ensure their safety during and after the surgery. Lastly, the doctor will perform a physical evaluation and, if they are a good candidate, he will construct a treatment plan based on the patient’s desired results. During this time, he will work with the patient to choose the best breast augmentation options, such as incision type, placement, and implant type and size.
Before beginning the breast augmentation procedure, Dr. Hamlet will mark the incision locations on the breast to ensure accuracy throughout the breast augmentation procedure. Next, our certified anesthesiologist will administer the general anesthesia so patients remain comfortable during the procedure. The doctor then makes the previously decided upon incisions for the insertion of the implant. The implant choice, placement, and insertion method will have also been chosen during the consultation. Pockets within the breasts will be created for optimal placement and position of the implant. The implant will either be placed in front of or behind the muscle.
For the insertion of the implants, Dr. Hamlet will either fill the saline implant once the shell is inside the breast pocket or a pre-filled silicone implant will be inserted. Once the implants have been inserted and positioned to the desired aesthetic, he will close the incisions using thin sutures and a surgical bra will be placed.
Once the breast augmentation procedure is complete, the patient will be taken to the recovery area where they will be monitored for a duration of time before being released. Our staff will provide the patient with recovery instructions they are advised to follow to ensure optimal healing and results.
Dr. Hamlet recommends that his post-operative patients walk a brief amount after their surgery to improve circulation and reduce the risk of clotting. The compression garment should continuously be worn throughout the recovery stage to minimize the amount of swelling and bruising and speed up the healing process.
During recovery, it is asked that patients refrain from their daily activities for the first few days after the procedure. Light activities can be returned to after this time. More strenuous activities, such as lifting and exercising, should be avoided for at least 3-4 weeks following the surgery. If any questions arise during this time, our medical staff is available to assist in any way possible.
Breast Augmentation Results
Although results can be seen instantly, the final beautiful results can be seen after a couple of months once the swelling and bruising has fully subsidized. Our previous breast augmentation patients have been delighted with their results and have often noticed an improvement in confidence and self-image.
Depending on the choice of implant, annual check-ups may be necessary to ensure the patient’s safety and the longevity of their results. This information will be further discussed during the initial consultation with Dr. Hamlet.
The cost of breast augmentation will vary from person to person. There are many different factors that go into the final price of this customizable procedure such as the type of implant, size, and if any additional procedures will be combined with it to further the patient’s results. Once Dr. Hamlet has evaluated the patient, he will then work with them to construct an individualized procedure plan to achieve these goals. This will allow the doctor to provide each patient with an accurate quote tailored entirely to them.
