Defining Fat Transfer
The purpose of fat transfer, otherwise known as fat grafting, is to naturally enhance the body by extracting fat cells from a determined area and injecting it into the area of concern. When performing this procedure, fat is harvested using VASER Hi-Def Liposuction from any area of the body where there is an excess of fat. There may be a need to take fat from more than one area to have enough to perform a successful transfer. The fat is then purified and treated to avoid infection and re-introduced via small syringes into the area needing additional volume. The Hamlet Clinic uses the Coleman Technique for this particular procedure that was developed by Dr. Sydney Coleman.
This specific method of fat grafting has now become the world standard for this type of surgery.
Because fat transfers use a patient’s own fat cells, it is considered biocompatible which means patients are greatly decreasing chances of allergic reactions or rejection from the body. The fat that is injected back into the specified area will gain its own blood supply and make a long-lasting home. This body sculpting procedure achieves the patient’s ultimate goal without the hassle of implants or short-term results of dermal fillers.
Who is a Good Candidate?
The ideal candidate for a fat transfer procedure should:
- Be in good physical and mental health
- Have enough excess fat deposits that can be removed to augment the area of concern
Not be overweight
- Have realistic expectations of the procedure and results
Fat transfer is used to help an array of different issues and concerns that a patient may have with their body. Fat grafting can be used to diminish wrinkles, reduce the appearance of scars, and add volume to the face, breasts, hands, and/or butt while slimming other areas of the body. If a patient desires natural augmentation while contouring their body, they are encouraged to come in for a with Dr. Grant Hamlet and see if a fat transfer can achieve their goals.
Types of Fat Transfers
Fat transfer is a general term to describe the transferring of fat from one location of the body to another. Below is a list of the fat transfer procedures we offer at The Hamlet Clinic:
Facial Fat Transfer
Facial fat transfer is performed on patients who have deep creases, wrinkles, and/or volume loss on the face. Common treatments are smile lines, deep set forehead lines, and cheek, temple, and lip augmentation. Facial fat transfer can also help diminish acne scars. The fat used for transfer is normally pulled from the thighs, abdomen, or love handles.
Hand rejuvenation is beneficial for patients who are starting to see signs of aging on their hands. Fat transfer to the hands will decrease tendon and vein visibility and add youthful volume. This procedure has the benefits dermal fillers would provide but lasts incredibly longer.
Natural breast augmentation can be performed using the fat grafting technique. This is ideal for women who are looking to minimally increase their breast size without implants. Patients desiring a more dramatic transformation should consider breast implants. Breast fat transfer does have its advantages over implants. It does not require the need for removal and replacement as implants do because the fat graft makes a lasting home in its new location with a newly gained blood supply. There is also little to no chance of an adverse reaction with a fat transfer because the material is not foreign to the body.
Breast Implants Combined with Fat Transfer
Breast implants combined with fat transfer is the addition of a fat graft over breast implants. The procedure can consist of the actual placement of the implants at the same time as the fat transfer. However, Dr. Hamlet can perform a fat transfer for patients who have gotten breast implants from another surgeon and are concerned with irregularities or rippling of the skin. A fat graft will smooth the area and leave the patient with the desired shape and size.
Breast Reconstruction with Fat Transfer
Breast reconstruction with fat transfer is designed for women who have had a lumpectomy or mastectomy. Fat grafting is ideal for correcting breast irregularities or improving symmetry.
Buttock augmentation, otherwise referred to as a Brazilian Butt Lift, avoids the use of implants by placing fat into buttock that has been extracted from a different area. Fat is often taken from the lower back, abdomen, and thigh to increase the appearance of projection.
With this fat transfer procedure, the butt is given a full, curvaceous shape that feels natural – because it is!
Calf Augmentation is a procedure designed to add size and shape to the calves, making them more contoured and providing a more aesthetically pleasing, shapely look. This procedure is performed just like any other fat transfer procedure. The doctor will excess fat from another part of the body and then strategically inject into the calves. Calf augmentation leaves patients feeling more confident, especially when wearing shorts and swimwear.
After this appointment is complete, the patient will be provided their individual quote for their procedure.
Fat transfer consultations differ from one to the next because there are many different types of fat grafting, so many consults are never on the same type of procedure. The general standard consult consists of discussing body concerns with Dr. Hamlet, what he or she would like out of the procedure, and make a unique plan to help them get the bodies they desire. The doctor will need to collect medical history, medication lists, and any other health issues that may be of concern. Once this is complete the doctor will go through a physical examination and look to see where to extract fat from and where the patient would like it to be placed.
Fat Transfer Process
Before starting the official surgery, Dr. Hamlet will inject the patient with a local anesthetic.
Dr. Hamlet performs fat transfers with 3 main steps: harvesting, transferring, and placement. Harvesting entails the removal of the excess fat from the designated area using liposuction for extraction. The transferal of the removed fat into small surgical syringes is the next step. The doctor then processes and purify the fat cells.
This allows viable fat to be broken down and placed into different locations on the body. The last step of the procedure is the placement. Placement is done by injecting the fat cells into the chosen area and inserted multiple times until the desired results have been met. Dr. Hamlet will place his patients in bandages or a compression garment to help prevent bruising and swelling.
It is important to have transportation set up, as well as someone that can assist with daily activities or any concerns that come along during recovery. Dr. Hamlet provides each patient with specific post-op instructions in order to obtain the best results. Normally within 2-3 days, the bandages will be removed and the patient is able to shower again. Common symptoms in the recovery stage are redness/bruising for the first 2-3 days and swelling that can last a few weeks.
In addition to the VASER lipo healing and recovery process, you will also need to be aware of the newly transferred fat, making sure you do not apply any direct pressure on the area for a minimum of two weeks post operatively. We recommend two weeks off work for buttock fat transfers to accommodate this.
Fat transfer can achieve fantastic, natural-looking results for those people who have enough excess fat, and the desire to enlarge or re-volumise an area, or correct an imbalance in contour. Because fat transfer is meant to last longer than fillers while providing a very natural-looking correction to the area of choice, it is a very good choice for our patients who are not looking to completely alter their body. Most results are long lasting because the fat cells are excepted by the body, whereas fillers and implants have a chance of the body rejecting them.
Results will leave patients pleased due to Dr. Hamlet’s transformational techniques that contour and correct naturally and evenly.
The cost of fat transfer will be based upon procedure time rather than areas. No two patients bodies are the same, nor do they have the same areas of concern which is why we feel this the most straightforward way of charging due to areas that differ in size from patient to patient. Once you have had your surgical consultation, a detailed quotation will be sent to you that is an all-inclusive price with no hidden extras. Come in for a consultation today and Dr. Hamlet will provide you the tools you need to have your dream body!
